English Premier League pair Southampton and Sunderland are interested in signing Uruguayan striker Abel Hernandez from Italian outfit Palermo.

Hernandez has a further two years left on his contract with Palermo, having joined the Sicilian club from Penarol.

The striker’s agent was in England earlier this summer to gauge the level of interest English clubs have for his client and he received positive feedback.

Sunderland and Southampton have expressed an interest in the Uruguayan and they are willing to bring him to England in the current transfer window, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has created a dossier on Hernandez and is expected to make a bid for him in the next few days.

However Southampton, who signed Graziano Pelle earlier this summer, are also interested in signing one more striker and have marked Hernandez out as a possible target.

The Uruguayan has scored 36 goals in 122 appearances for Palermo and has earned 14 international caps for his country.
