Arsene Wenger believes that Steven Gerrard wanted to win the Premier League title with the help of Luis Suarez last season, which prompted him to ask the Uruguayan not to join Arsenal last summer.

Gerrard said yesterday that he would have been disappointed at Suarez if he joined Arsenal last year as he felt the Uruguayan was too good for the Gunners.

"I would have been really sad and disappointed to see Luis go to Arsenal. With all due respect to them, I said to him that he was too good for Arsenal”, the Liverpool captain said.

Wenger has given a stern reply to Gerrard’s barbs at Arsenal by saying that the former England captain wanted to fulfill his ambition of winning the Premier League title on the back of Suarez’s goals. And despite convincing Suarez to stay at Anfield, Gerrard still could not realise his dream.

He further added that Liverpool failed to win the league and Suarez left for Barcelona this summer.

"You're never too good for Arsenal and Steven Gerrard knows that", Wenger said in a press conference, via his club's site.

"But I can understand completely that he asked him to stay because he wanted him to play with him and have a chance to win the Premier League.

“But it didn't happen, and anyway, Suarez left."
