Athletic Bilbao are interested in snapping up Nacho Monreal from Arsenal in the current transfer window.

The Basque club are firm fans of the Arsenal left-back and are hoping to tempt him to return to his homeland this summer, according to Italian broadcaster Sportitalia.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger snapped Monreal up from Malaga in January 2013, but the Spaniard has faced a fierce battle with Kieran Gibbs for a starting spot at the Emirates Stadium.

Monreal featured in 23 Premier League games for Arsenal last season, as well as six Champions League appearances, three FA Cup games and two League Cup clashes.

Gibbs managed more Premier League appearances, turning out on 28 occasions for the Gunners, while he was also selected for the FA Cup final.

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal can be tempted into cashing in on Monreal if Athletic Bilbao make an approach.

The defender's contract at the Emirates Stadium runs until 2017.
