Arsenal have confirmed the permanent departure of Swiss defender Johan Djourou to Bundesliga side Hamburg.

Djourou spent last term on loan at Hamburg, helping the club avoid relegation from the Bundesliga by beating Greuther Furth in a relegation playoff.

The Switzerland international impressed at Hamburg and has now sealed a permanent move to the northern German club.

Djourou joined Arsenal in 2003 as a 16-year-old, rising through the ranks to make 144 appearances for the club's senior side.

The 27-year-old was also handed the captain's armband by Arsene Wenger on a number of occasions, but eventually headed elsewhere in search of regular first team football.
