Southampton are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen’s Germany international defender Philipp Wollscheid.

Wollscheid joined Leverkusen from Nurnberg in 2012 and still has three years left on his contract with the Bundesliga side.

He made only 13 league starts for the German outfit last season and is believed to be keen to move away from the BayArena.

The Saints have lost Dejan Lovren to Liverpool this summer, therefore are keen to sign a central defender and the German defender fits the bill for Ronald Koeman's men.

The 25-year-old’s agent, Guido Nickolay, has confirmed that there are offers from the Premier League for his client, but refused to the name the club involved.

"Philipp wants to play again of course”, Nickolay told German daily Express.

“There are concrete offers from England and from the Bundesliga for him.”

The player will cost around €5m, a fee Southampton are ready to pay as the club have considerable funds at their disposal after they sold some of their top players this season.

Wollscheid has made 66 appearances for Leverkusen and has two international caps for Germany to his name.
