Leeds United boss David Hockaday has refused to be downbeat despite his side losing their Championship opener 2-0 away at Millwall.

An eighth minute Mark Beevers goal and an 88th minute Shaun Williams penalty handed Hockaday defeat in his first official game in charge of the Yorkshire giants.

And the Leeds boss was honest enough to admit that he was worried at 1-0 and felt the game could have quickly slipped beyond his side.

However, Hockaday is not disheartened and has vowed to look to improve the Whites, who he felt were not hungry enough to push Millwall.

"We did not start well in the first half. We lacked intensity and purpose to our play", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"I was delighted to get in at 1-0 to be perfectly honest. We had chances though to get something out of the game, we had them on their heels later in the second half.

"It is one game. We are looking to improve.

"Millwall have beaten us 2-0. It is all about moments and we did not have moments. We had a go and certainly had the chance to equalise in the second half.

"I wasn't happy with our performance in the first half, we didn't get up to the pace and they looked hungrier. Second half we made a game of it and had chances we really should be hitting the net."

Leeds now switch their focus to the League Cup, with a visit from Accrington on the cards for Tuesday evening.

They are next in Championship action against Middlesbrough on Saturday 16th August.
