Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking has conceded the club's pursuit of Nicklas Bendtner reveals they have been forced to abandon their push for a top quality striker.

The Dane was on the fringes of the Arsenal squad last season and made only 14 appearances and one league start for the Gunners.

Arsenal parted ways with the striker after his contract expired last month and since then the 26-year-old has been on the lookout for a new club.

The Dane was in talks to join Eintracht Frankfurt, but the Bundesliga club decided against signing the striker earlier this summer due to financial concerns.

However, Wolfsburg are set to give a new lease of life to Bendtner’s career and are in talks to sign the forward, according to Kicker.

Hecking has hinted that the Wolves' talks with Bendtner represent a decrease in ambition, after the club tried to sign Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid, but lost out to Juventus.

"It's becoming more and more difficult.", Hecking said.

"We have dared to go for the top shelf, which is now empty. Now we'll have to look a little further down."

Bendtner has earned 59 international caps for Denmark and has hit the back of the net 24 times for his country.
