Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has retired from international duty with Germany.

The lanky centre-back, who helped Germany to win the World Cup in Brazil this summer, has won 104 caps for his country and feels the time is right to stand aside for the next generation.

Mertesacker told the German FA's site: "I am proud to have had ten years, five major tournaments, 104 international matches and have won the World Cup in Brazil.

"This is a wonderful conclusion, for me the right time has come to withdraw from the national team and make room for the next generation.

"Overall, I am very grateful for this time and I look forward to devoting my energy in the future to my club and my family."
