Everton have been dealt an injury blow on the eve of the new season with the news that midfielder Ross Barkley has picked up an injury.

The England international, who only signed a new contract with the club earlier this summer, is set to undergo a scan at the weekend after injuring his leg in training.

Barkley is out of the Toffees' opening Premier League match against Leicester City tomorrow, while he could miss as much as six weeks of football.

The 20-year-old has established himself as a key man at Everton and the news will be a bitter blow to boss Roberto Martinez.

Barkley headed to the World Cup earlier this summer with England and has been tipped to take on a more important role with the Three Lions following Steven Gerrard's retirement from international duty.

A product of the club's youth system, Barkley has been linked with both Manchester United and Liverpool.

However, Everton signalled their determination to keep the midfielder by handing him a fresh contract.
