Liverpool have made a move to sign Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero from Italian Serie A side Sampdoria.

The Reds are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper following the departure of Pepe Reina to Bayern Munich.

Reina's departure has created space on the wage bill for another custodian to challenge number 1 Simon Mignolet, and Romero is Liverpool's target.

According to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool have now lodged a €2m bid for Romero.

The ball is now in Sampdoria's court, but the Italian side are thought to be considering asking for Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates as part of the deal.

Coates missed the majority of last season with a knee injury, but did recover in time to turn out for Uruguay at the World Cup.

The centre-back is highly rated by Sampdoria.
