Leeds United boss David Hockaday has expressed his delight after his side scored a late winner to beat Middlesbrough 1-0 in the Championship earlier today.

Both teams worked hard and cancelled each other out at Elland Road, before new Leeds striker Billy Sharp steered the ball home on his debut, with just three minutes left to play.

And Hockaday, whose side lost their Championship opener away at Millwall last weekend, was delighted to clock up three points, praising his side's hard and tireless work, which saw several players suffer cramp towards the end of the match.

"It's what we have to do [working hard] because it's what we've got. We're young, we're inexperienced in many ways, but second half especially I just thought every player in a white shirt gave me everything. I thought they were super as regards effort", he told LUTV.

"We've got to get better quality and we're working on that. But we made it really, really hard for Middlesbrough to break us down, who are arguably the form team if you go to the end of last season and this season. A clean sheet was great and to get the winner so late on, I'm really happy"

The Leeds boss knows he is at the start of a journey though, even if he feels the club is slowly but surely turning to head in the right direction.

"We're just trying to slowly turn this big ship around, this big juggernaut we have and we're trying to do things the right way", Hockaday said.

Leeds now have another home game in quick succession, with Sami Hyypia's Brighton side visiting Elland Road on Tuesday.

The Seagulls have lost their opening two Championship games, going down 1-0 to both Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham City.
