Borussia Dortmund legend Jurgen Kohler believes that the club must splash the cash and show their ambition to keep hold of highly-rated attacking midfielder Marco Reus.

The Germany international has been linked with a number of clubs, including Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Manchester United and Liverpool, while a release clause in his contract which becomes active next summer is attracting even more attention.

Kohler, who played for Dortmund between 1995 and 2002, winning the Champions League with the club in 1997, feels his old club must show their ambition and eagerness to win trophies if they are to keep Reus.

Indeed, Reus has yet to win a major trophy with Jurgen Klopp's men.

"For Dortmund it'll be difficult to keep Marco", the former centre-back told Bild.

"For Reus, Borussia remains only an option if Dortmund are going to invest properly in the next four or five years. But they haven't reached this point yet."

And Kohler expects Bayern Munich to be at the front of the queue when it comes to tempting Reus to quit Dortmund.

"Bayern will keep at it. At the end, I'm sure it will be about the money."
