Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has urged his side to avoid a repeat of the "disaster" they experienced after their first Premier League triumph in the 2011/12 campaign.

Pellegrini’s predecessor Roberto Mancini guided the Citizens to their maiden title three years ago, but Manchester City finished the next season 11 points behind champions Manchester United.

In addition, the Etihad Stadium outfit failed to win any piece of silverware that term and as a result, Mancini was shown the door after the end of the season.

Pellegrini, who also recounted the incident of how Manchester United finished seventh last season after winning the Premier League in the previous campaign, helped his side to the league title and the League Cup last season.

And the Chilean tactician called on Manchester City to become Premier League champions this season too, thereby not repeating the mistake after their maiden title triumph.

"This team won the title two years ago and the next season was a disaster", Pellegrini told the BBC.

"It wasn't a useful year for anyone. Last season Manchester United had a disaster after winning the title.

"It's important from the beginning that we understand we won the title last season and need to win again this year."

Manchester City, who started their title defence with a 2-0 win over Newcastle United yesterday, are next up against Liverpool next Monday.
