Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has underlined the importance of his side grinding out results in the Premier League.

The Reds, who played splendid free-flowing football last season, labored to a 2-1 win over Southampton in their Premier League opener at Anfield on Sunday.

Liverpool made Anfield a fortress in the 2013/14 campaign, losing just two league games at the ground and won majority of their matches on Merseyside by big margins.

However Rodgers, who is aware that his side cannot always play “beautiful football”, was pleased after Liverpool bagged the full three points against the Saints.

"A lot of the games here at Anfield we were winning reasonably comfortably last season, so we knew that the expectancy for us was going to be to win the game", the Northern Irishman told the club's official site.

"We won't always win by playing beautiful football. Sometimes we're going to have to dig in and grind a result out, and that's what we did."

Liverpool, who were defeated by Southampton at Anfield last season, will next face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Monday, before facing Tottenham Hotspur in another away encounter six days later.
