Former Red Devil Gary Neville has explained that new leaders need to emerge in the Manchester United dressing room, who can take the club forward in the future.

Manchester United lost a vast amount of experience in the form of Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand this summer. Vidic and Evra were also the club captain and vice-captain respectively.

"Big personalities like Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have gone, and new leaders and characters need to emerge in the dressing room", Neville wrote in United Review.

The former Red Devils skipper believes that a younger crop of leaders need to emerge in the dressing room who will take up the responsibility for giving a new direction to the club.

"This is now the opportunity for Phil Jones, David de Gea, Juan Mata, Ander Herrera – players who've been signed – to become leaders and develop the mentality that they want to take over the mantle."

Manchester United appointed Wayne Rooney as the club captain last week and anointed Darren Fletcher as his deputy.

However, Neville feels that the other senior players in the team need to share the responsibility and step up to the plate to provide much needed leadership to the squad.

"That's particularly true for the ones who have been there for a period of time.

“Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Jonny Evans are the five obvious players who have won many honours between them, now they need to step up."
