Aston Villa have approached former Liverpool and Monaco left-back John Arne Riise about a move to Villa Park, according to French broadcaster Eurosport.

Riise is a free agent this summer, having parted ways with Fulham, and is on the lookout for a new club.

The 33-year-old, who won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, has attracted interest from several clubs in Spain.

However, Aston Villa have approached the Norwegian about continuing his career in England.

Paul Lambert's men have already picked up two players on free transfers this summer, securing former Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole and ex-Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos.

Villa started their Premier League campaign last weekend by securing a 1-0 win away at Stoke City.

It remains to be seen whether they will be able to tempt Riise to sign on the dotted line.
