Leeds United manager David Hockaday has confirmed that summer signing Zan Benedicic still needs to gain match fitness and explained that is the reason for the midfielder's absence.

The Yorkshire giants snapped Benedicic up from AC Milan on a season-long loan deal earlier this summer, the youngster arriving with high expectations.

But Hockaday has been reluctant to throw him into Championship action and Benedicic played no part in last night's 2-0 defeat against Brighton.

And the Leeds manager has confirmed why the Slovenian was absent.

"With Benedicic it is about getting him match fit", Hockaday told the club's site.

"He came to us, trained a couple of days and played against Accrington Stanley [in the League Cup] and it was very obvious that he lacked match fitness.

"We have got a behind-closed-doors game on Wednesday so he will play in that and we will see where he is. There is one or two players that need a little bit of match practise."
