Real Madrid have dropped another strong hint that Angel di Maria is heading out of the Bernabeu exit door by excusing the Argentine from the squad for tonight's Spanish Supercup against Atletico Madrid.

Di Maria, who coach Carlo Ancelotti has admitted wants to leave Real Madrid, had been named in the 22-man squad to face the Spanish champions in the second leg of the contest.

But Di Maria, along with Sami Khedira, was excused from duty by Ancelotti earlier today.

Real Madrid are aiming to protect Di Maria, who played in the first leg against Atletico Madrid, from injury, as a potential transfer moves ever closer.

The Argentina international has been strongly linked with Manchester United, who appear his most likely destination given Paris Saint-Germain's worries about breaching UEFA's financial fair play rules if signing the player.

Real Madrid are now expecting to ship Di Maria out before the transfer window slams shut on 1st September.

Khedira is also likely to follow the winger out of the door after refusing to extend a contract which has just one year left to run.
