Greek international striker Georgios Samaras has joined West Brom on a free transfer.

Samaras, who left Scottish champions Celtic this summer after his contract expired, signed a two-year deal with the Baggies after completing a medical today.

It was his stoppage time goal against Ivory Coast that allowed Greece to qualify for the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in their history, capping off a good tournament for Samaras.

He has also played for Manchester City in the Premier League and played in the Champions League with Celtic.

Baggies manager Alan Irvine is delighted at signing experienced forward Samaras and feels that the Greek’s experience at the top level will come in handy this season.

“We’ve signed a player with vast experience and I’m delighted to welcome Sami to the club”, the manager told the club’s official site.

“He has played a lot of football at the highest levels – Champions League, European Championships and World Cups – and the feedback we’ve got on him, from people like Neil Lennon, states he thrives on the big occasion.”

He scored 71 goals in 243 appearances for Celtic and has earned 77 international caps for Greece.
