Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is poised to offload Danny Welbeck, despite blasting media reports which said the England international has been told he can leave Old Trafford.

Van Gaal was challenged about Welbeck's future extensively in his pre-Sunderland press conference yesterday, but refused to be drawn into speaking specifically about the issue, apart from blasting the media for their coverage of the situation.

But according to ITV, Welbeck has been told he can leave Manchester United, despite featuring on a regular basis in the club's pre-season tour of the United States.

Van Gaal, pressed on Welbeck again and again during his press conference, finally snapped back: "I discuss it with [executive vice-chairman] Ed Woodward and the Glazers, not with the media.

"I don't ask you if you are sacked tomorrow. It is the same thing.

"I discuss it with players and the players discuss it with me."

Welbeck has been linked with both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, but Manchester United are not keen on strengthening top four rivals.

The striker is a product of the club's youth system and popular with the Manchester United faithful.
