Sunderland are closing in on the signing of defender Sebastian Coates from fellow Premier League club Liverpool.

Coates is assessing his options before the transfer window slams shut, as he seeks to play regular first team football throughout 2014/15.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet is a firm admirer of his countryman and is now close to signing him on loan, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato.

Coates missed the vast majority of last season with a serious knee injury, being loaned to a club in his homeland of Uruguay to complete his rehabilitation and return to action.

The defender achieved his dream of playing at the World Cup for Uruguay, but is now looking to continue clocking up first team action.
