West Brom have sealed a deal for FC Porto winger Silvestre Varela on loan for the season. The Portuguese international passed a medical on Sunday to become the 10th recruit for the Hawthorns during this transfer window.

The winger boasts 26 international caps to his name and scored 30 times in 115 Primeira Liga games for Porto. West Brom head coach Alan Irvine, was full of praise for the versatile winger upon the completion of the signing.



“Silvestre is a vastly experienced player, both with Porto and his national team, and I’m delighted we’ve managed to secure his services”, Irvine told his club's official site.

“He’s got pace and power, gets his fair share of goals and is also a creator of chances for others.

Varela was part of the Portuguese squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, appearing as a substitute to score a late goal in a group stage match against the United States.

Varela came through Sporting Clube De Portugal’s youth system and was a regular with the Portuguese Under-21s. His impressive performances during his time at Porto earned him a place in the national team.

He is now part of a West Brom side that have kicked off their 2014/15 Premier League campaign with draws against Sunderland and Southampton.
