Sporting Lisbon are willing to cut their asking price for midfielder William Carvalho, to allow Arsenal to complete the signing of the Portugal international.

However, the Primeira Liga side have one condition – William must be sent back to the club on a season-long loan deal, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato.

Arsenal have been chasing William for much of the summer but have struggled to find an agreement with Sporting Lisbon, who hold all the cards given the player has a €45m release clause the Gunners will not meet.

Sporting Lisbon are willing to accept a lower sum for the midfielder if Arsenal throw players into the deal on loan.

But in the absence of that, they want William to be sent back to the club on a season-long loan deal.

Arsenal have been keen to sign William this summer as they bid to add extra steel to their midfield and it is not clear whether boss Arsene Wenger will be open to an agreement which sees the player remain in Lisbon until 2015.

William shone at Sporting Lisbon last term and the Portuguese giants want to keep hold of the player to aid in a title push.
