Bayern Munich have confirmed a deal to sign centre-back Mehdi Benatia from Italian giants Roma.

Roma have been battling to keep hold of Benatia this summer, but have failed and agreed to allow the Moroccan to head to the Allianz Arena.

Benatia will sign a five-year contract with the German champions and is thought to be costing the club a total package worth €30m.

Benatia starred at Roma last term and helped the club to a finish of second in Serie A, securing the return of Champions League football to the Stadio Olimpico.

He was linked with a number of clubs earlier this summer, including Chelsea and Manchester United – but Bayern Munich have won the race for the 27-year-old's signature.

Benatia further strengthens a side which won the Bundesliga last term in record quick time.

Roma will now move to attempt to replace the former Udinese man, but his loss is a heavy blow to their hopes of fighting for the Serie A title this season.
