Manchester United have completed the signing of Angel di Maria from Real Madrid, with the Argentine putting pen to paper on a five-year contract.

The winger arrived in Manchester last night and headed to the club's Carrington training ground earlier today, working quickly to seal his big-money move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United announced: "Angel di Maria has completed his move to Manchester United for a British record fee of £59.7m."

Di Maria himself remarked: "I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester United. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Spain and there were a lot of clubs interested in me, but United is the only club that I would have left Real Madrid for."

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal was also delighted, explaining that: "Angel is a world-class midfielder but most importantly he is a team player. There is no doubting his immense natural talent."

Real Madrid snapped the winger up from Benfica in 2010 and he wasted little time in impressing at the Bernabeu.

Di Maria helped Los Blancos claim a record tenth European Cup last term, playing a key role in the final against Atletico Madrid in Lisbon.

Manchester United are breaking the British transfer record for Di Maria, paying £59.7m.

The sum beats the £50m Chelsea paid Liverpool to sign Fernando Torres in January 2011.

The last time Manchester United broke the British transfer record was in 2002, when they paid Leeds United a fee of £29.1m to snap up Rio Ferdinand.

Speculation is now raging that the club could also sign Daley Blind, after an Ajax director was spotted at Manchester United's training ground today.
