Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that he sees Angel di Maria as his answer to Arjen Robben, with the Argentine able to adapt to different systems on the pitch.

Van Gaal was able to call upon Robben during his time in charge at Bayern Munich and believes he has now signed a similar player for Manchester United in the shape of Di Maria.

The winger penned a five-year contract at Manchester United yesterday, joining from Real Madrid on a deal which broke the British transfer record, coming in at £59.7m and added some positivity to a day which also saw the club lose 4-0 to MK Dons in the League Cup.

And Van Gaal feels the 26-year-old can be used in much the same way he used Robben at the Allianz Arena.

"I have bought Di Maria because he can play inside and wide. It's very handy", the Dutchman was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"When I was coach at Bayern Munich, I bought Arjen Robben and he could also play on the wings and inside. Then I always had the opportunity to change."

Van Gaal has yet to register a win in his first three games in charge of Manchester United, with the League Cup exit now leaving the club involved in just two competitions this season.

Next up for the Red Devils is a trip to face Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.
