Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes that Mario Balotelli will improve the club’s attack this season and hand manager Brendan Rodgers a crucial extra option up front.

Balotelli joined Liverpool from AC Milan earlier this week, with the Reds splashing out £16m to capture the Italy international. The striker became the ninth player Liverpool have signed this summer.

Aldridge, who turned out for Liverpool between 1987 and 1989, believes that Balotelli will be able to strike up a productive partnership with Daniel Sturridge, as boss Rodgers will know how to use the pair together.

"He provides another option and we've got a lot of games this season, so Brendan has plenty of options now”, Aldridge explained to the club’s official site.

"The manager will have a plan. It could be Balotelli going through the middle with Daniel playing off him or out wide, as he did to great effect last season.”

The former Republic of Ireland international also feels that if Balotelli gets it right on the pitch for Liverpool, he could turn out to become an iconic player for the Reds.

"He could be phenomenal and he's the type of player who will be endearing to the fans. He could be iconic”, said Aldridge.

Balotelli made 30 appearances in Serie A for AC Milan last season and hit the back of the net on 14 occasions.
