Premier League new boys Leicester City have reached an agreement with Championship side Wigan Athletic to sign midfielder James McArthur for a fee in the region of £7m.

The 26-year-old will become Nigel Pearson's sixth signing this summer if he manages to pass his medical with the Foxes, scheduled for today, according to the BBC.

Having joined Wigan in 2010, the Scotland international managed a total of 151 appearances for the Latics scoring 11 goals.

Leicester had an initial offer for the player rejected by Wigan chairman Dave Whelan, who had insisted on a higher price for such a "quality player".

"We need the right offer", Whelan, who has now agreed to the sale, was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"I don't want to stop the lad from going into the Premier League.

"What they offered was good, but not quite to our expectations.

"We have to get enough money to get the necessary replacement.

"There is bound to be more offers from other Premier League clubs or Leicester because he is such a tough, quality player."

Newly promoted Premier League side Burnley had also shown keen interest in securing the services of the player.
