Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Argentine defender Federico Fazio from Sevilla.

Fazio, who is thought to have cost Spurs £8m, the sum of his release clause with Los Rojiblancos, has signed a four-year contract at White Hart Lane.

The defender is a quickfire replacement for Michael Dawson, who was sold to Hull City yesterday.

Fazio helped Sevilla win the Europa League last term and was highly rated by the Spanish club, making a total of 194 appearances in their colours.

However, he has opted to head to England, where he links up with countryman Mauricio Pochettino, ending a seven-year stint with Los Rojiblancos.

Sevilla had been reluctant to lose the services of the centre-back, but he rejected a new contract earlier this summer, which would have increased his release clause.

It remains to be seen if Fazio will make his Tottenham debut this weekend against Liverpool.
