Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has stressed the need to field a quality midfield in order to compete for trophies this season.

Los Blancos have brought in two quality outfield players in the form of James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos this year and have been trying different positions for the two players on the pitch.

The situation with Rodriguez has been particularly significant with Ancelotti insisting that in spite of having played the 23-year-old in a deeper role, he did well and believes that he will do it consistently in order to help his team.

"We tried to play James a little bit deeper and he’s doing well", Ancelotti told his club's official site.

Speaking about his decision to not fielding Xabi Alonso during their last league match against Cordoba on Monday, Ancelotti added: "Alonso had played two consecutive matches and didn’t play so that he could rest”.

Real Madrid take on Real Sociedad in their second league match on 31st August.
