Bradford City defender James Meredith has praised his side hard-fought 2-1 win over Leeds United in the League Cup this evening, revealing the players knew what a win would mean for the fans.

The two Yorkshire rivals clashed at Valley Parade and Leeds took the lead when Matt Smith struck in the 82nd minute, a feat for ten men, with the Whites having had Luke Murphy sent off in the 31st minute.

But Bradford hit back, with first Billy Knott and then James Hansen grabbing goals in quick succession, in the 84th minute and the 86th minute.

Despite nine minutes of injury time, Bradford held firm with Meredith marshalling the defence, and Smith heading over the bar in the final minute when given a golden chance.

And the defender has explained the players knew just how important victory was for the supporters, as 19,000 packed into Valley Parade.

"It's such a special competition and we did so well two years ago [when we reached the final]", Meredith told Sky Sports.

"It was difficult, Leeds United are a very good team.

"We were up for it, we wanted to win.

"We know what it means to the fans and we just went for it", the defender added.
