Arsenal have made a move to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, slapping in a bid.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is desperate to add another defender to his ranks before the transfer window slams shut, having sold Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona earlier this summer.



Wenger has vowed only to buy if he can find players of the right quality and in the Dortmund defender, widely known as Sokratis, he feels he has found his man.

According to Sky Italia, Wenger has now acted to reel in the Greece international, sending a bid to Dortmund for his services. Arsenal's offer is €15m, plus bonuses. However, Dortmund want €25m and talks are continuing.

 


The defender, who joined Dortmund in 2013 from fellow Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, has won 51 caps for Greece at international level.

Sokratis rose to prominence with AEK Athens in his homeland, before switching to Italy with Genoa in 2008.

After impressing with the Rossoblu, he found a path to AC Milan in 2010, but struggled to make an impact at the San Siro and was loaned to Werder Bremen just one year later.

The Bundesliga side soon took Sokratis on a permanent basis.
