England manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed that Calum Chambers' call-up to the England squad is because of defensive injuries.

The 19-year-old defender joined Arsenal earlier this summer from Southampton and has already played in the Champions League for the Gunners.

Hodgson said that Arsene Wenger believes that Chambers is ready to represent England.

"Arsene assured me he's ready for any challenge”, the England manager was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Chambers has made 17 appearances for the England Under-19 side, but has never represented the Three Lions at Under-21 level.

However, the former Liverpool manager said that injuries in the defensive area have forced him to call-up the full-back for the senior side, jumping him over the Under-21s and straight into the senior ranks.

"Chambers jumps over the Under-21s but with 10 injuries and six of them in the defensive part of the field I didn't have the luxury of saying he could start in the Under-21s."
