Bayern Munich have agreed a deal to sign experienced midfielder Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid, the German champions have confirmed.

Alonso yesterday retired from international football with Spain and is now set to continue his club career under the watchful eye of Pep Guardiola at the Allianz Arena.



Bayern Munich announced: "FC Bayern confirm talks with Xabi Alonso and Real Madrid.

"The Spaniard is now expected to undergo a medical."

 


Alonso joined Real Madrid in 2009 from Liverpool. At Anfield he became a fan favourite and helped the Reds to the Champions League in 2005, before returning to his homeland.

The midfielder won the Champions League again this year, with Real Madrid picking up their tenth accolade in the process. Alonso also won one La Liga title, two Copa del Reys, one UEFA Super Cup and one Spanish Supercup during his five-year stint at the Bernabeu.

Bayern Munich have been in the market for a new midfielder following Javi Martinez picking up an injury in the German Supercup which ruled him out of action until the new year. And in Alonso, Guardiola has found his man.

Alonso won 114 caps for Spain during his international career and arrives in Germany to add much experience to the Bayern Munich midfield.
