Angel di Maria has revealed he spoke to Cristiano Ronaldo about wearing the number 7 shirt at Manchester United and is under no illusions about the responsibility of pulling on the famous number.

Ronaldo himself wore number 7 at Old Trafford before leaving the club to join Real Madrid. And now Di Maria makes the opposite journey, to pick up the special shirt.

The Argentina winger, who has cost Manchester United £59.7m to sign, told a press conference today: "Cristiano spoke to me at Madrid and explained how important it is.

"I hope I can live up to it."

The 26-year-old also insisted that he will play wherever manager Louis van Gaal wants him to, with the Dutchman looking to insert Di Maria into a 3-5-2 formation.

"It depends on the manager, where he wants me to play", Di Maria said.

"I have come here to work hard for the team."

Di Maria will hope to impress at Old Trafford, with the club having suffered a poor start to the new season.
