Jack Wilshere has lauded Arsenal’s defensive performance in their win against Besiktas last night.

The Gunners registered a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Turkish giants, which meant that they are through to the Champions League group stage.

Wilshere feels that Arsenal were under little pressure last night until Mathieu Debuchy was sent-off for a rash tackle.

"It wasn't until Mathieu went off that they caused us a problem”, the England international told Arsenal Player.

However, the Gunners held onto their lead and Wilshere said that the whole team contributed to their defensive solidity at the Emirates.

“But I think we dealt with it well. We dealt with crosses and the defence was great. Myself, Mathieu [Flamini] and Santi were in there working hard too. We showed great team spirit and hopefully we can continue that.”

The 22-year-old midfielder said that he knew that Arsenal can create chances but it was important to maintain their defensive solidity to progress to the group stage.

"We defended well as a unit. Our main principles are to defend well as a team. We know how to play football – that's our main strength.

“We know that we will create chances, we always have done and hopefully we can take that into the group stages.”
