Leeds United have won the race to sign Brian Montenegro on a season-long loan from Nacional, with the deal including an option to buy.

The Paraguayan striker had been strongly linked with Palermo, but Leeds have trumped the Serie A side and tempted Montenegro to head to England.

Montenegro is expected to fly to England later today and then undergo a medical with Leeds tomorrow, according to Sky Italia.

The switch will not be the 21-year-old's first taste of English football as he enjoyed a loan spell with West Ham United in the 2011/12 campaign.

The Paraguayan struggled to establish himself at Upton Park however and the Hammers did not move to keep him on a permanent basis.

Now Montenegro will have another bite at the English cherry, albeit in the second tier with Leeds.

The striker has been involved with Paraguay's national team at youth level and turned out at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup last year.
