Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole feels that the club need to send young forward James Wilson on loan to aid in his development.

The 18-year-old made his debut for the Red Devils against Hull City last season and marked the occasion with a brace in a 3-1 win at Old Trafford.

Wilson scored all four goals in Manchester Under-21 side’s 4-1 win over Manchester City Under-21s earlier this month.

However, he has made only one more senior appearance and that was in the League Cup loss to MK Dons on Tuesday.

Cole admits that it is a big step up to the senior side but said that Manchester United need to find ways to get Wilson more opportunities to nurture the striker’s talent.

"It is a big step [up to the senior side]", Cole told the club’s official site.

"At some stage, he will be given another chance. If it's not in the first team, he will go out on loan somewhere. When you have talent like that, you have got to give them the opportunity in some shape or form.”

The former England striker feels that if first team opportunities are limited Wilson should be sent out on loan so that he can continue to progress and get games under his belt.

"If he doesn't end up in the first team here soon, as we've got some good quality strikers, I do believe he'll go on loan and, when he goes on loan, he'll do very well."

The 18-year-old has scored a goal in two appearances for the England Under-18 side.
