Argentina World Cup goalkeeper Sergio Romero has a new admirer in the final few days of the summer transfer window. And it is Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.

Romero spent last season on loan at Monaco in France from Sampdoria and has found himself out of favour following his return to Italy.

The shot-stopper has been linked with an exit, with Liverpool and QPR both keeping a close watch on his situation at Sampdoria, and is keen to move on from the Serie A club.

And the Argentine could well end up in England, but not at Anfield or Loftus Road.

Indeed, according to Italian broadcaster Sportitalia, Van Gaal is keen on taking Romero to Old Trafford to provide competition to number 1 David de Gea.

Current reserve team goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard has grown uncomfortable warming the bench and is angling for an exit from Manchester United in search of regular first team football.

"Anders has reached the age where he has to play a little more. Therefore, we will go out and explore the prospects for a little more playing time", Lindegaard's agent explained earlier this month.

"The prospects are not good at United, where it is difficult with De Gea in front of him."

Romero starred in Argentina's run to the World Cup final earlier this summer, but it is unclear whether he is willing to swap one bench at Sampdoria for another at Manchester United.
