Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger may be fielding calls to buy a new striker, but he could be set to reinforce his defensive options with a deadline day beating move for Real Madrid's Alvaro Arbeloa.

The 31-year-old, who has recently been linked with moving to a club in the United Arab Emirates, is increasingly on the fringes at Real Madrid and is open to a switch elsewhere.

And Wenger, who sold Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona earlier this summer, is keen to strengthen his defensive options before the window slams shut.

According to Spanish daily El Confidencial, Arsenal are lining up a swoop for Arbeloa and could well see their efforts meet with success.

Arbeloa would arrive at the Emirates Stadium armed with prior experience of the Premier League.
