Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has refused to be drawn on a potential move for Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley, but admitted that "if something can happen we'll try it", with regards to new signings.

Lambert is looking to strengthen his squad on the eve of transfer deadline day and has been strongly linked with Cleverley, who is not thought to be in Louis van Gaal's plans at Old Trafford.

But whether the former Norwich boss will land the England international is unclear and Lambert is playing his cards close to his chest.

"No, nothing at the minute [on Cleverley]", he told Sky Sports, when asked if he had any news on a bid for the midfielder.

"There's one or two things we're trying to look at and if something can happen tomorrow we'll try it", he continued.

"And if not we'll get everyone back fit."

Aston Villa beat Hull City 2-1 today and currently sit third in the Premier League with seven points from three games, an encouraging start for Lambert's men.
