Manchester City are the new favourites to sign Monaco striker Radamel Falcao after a flurry of early bets this morning.

Falcao had appeared to announce yesterday that he was on his way to Real Madrid after a tweet from his official Twitter account announced "#HalaMadrid". But today the Colombian, who later removed the tweet, suggested it was a photo montage and should not have been posted.

Now Manchester City have seen their price to sign Falcao cut from 4/1 to 2/5 by bookmakers Betfair, following a flurry of bets.

Arsenal, who have been another team strongly linked with Falcao, have seen their price drift to 7/1, suggesting it is unlikely the Colombian will be heading to the Emirates Stadium.

Betfair PR manager Harry Phillips said: "Real Madrid looked nailed on to land Falcao all the way up until yesterday and were as short as 4/9 , but the market has shifted markedly in the last few hours and Manchester City are the team the punters want to be with now and they are as short as 2/5. We still get the feeling there’s a few more twists and turns in this one yet before the transfer deadline tomorrow."

Manchester United are 33/1 to snap up Falcao before the window slams shut, with other clubs in the running including AC Milan (14/1), Juventus (16/1) and Liverpool (25/1).

Falcao was absent from Monaco's matchday squad for their Ligue 1 clash with Lille yesterday.

The striker watched the match from the stands with his agent Jorge Mendes, further suggesting he will be on the way out.
