Roma have contacted Newcastle United to request defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa on a season-long loan deal, as they look to cover the departure of Mehdi Benatia.

Last season's Serie A runners-up recently sold centre-back Benatia to Bayern Munich and are now looking to bolster their defensive options before the transfer window slams shut.

Roma coach Rudi Garcia, who previously bossed Lille, is familiar with Yanga-Mbiwa from his time in Ligue 1 and is a firm fan of the 25-year-old.

Now Garcia wants to take the former Montpellier man to the Stadio Olimpico.

According to Sky Italia, Roma's offer for the defender is an initial season-long loan, with a purchase option set at €5m.

Newcastle are keen to offload Yanga-Mbiwa, who has been ruled surplus to requirements at St. James' Park by boss Alan Pardew.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Giallorossi's offer for the Frenchman meets with the Magpies' approval.
