Southampton are wrapping up the signing of Atletico Madrid centre-back Toby Alderweireld on a season-long loan deal.

Alderweireld, who joined Atletico Madrid just last year from Dutch champions Ajax, is looking for pastures new after failing to make an impression at the Vicente Calderon.

The Belgium international has been linked with Arsenal in recent days, but is thought to have concluded he would be better served by playing regular first team football rather than serving as backup to the Laurent Kosicleny and Per Mertesacker partnership at the Emirates Stadium.

And according to Belgian daily Het Laaste Niewus, that has sent Alderweireld to Southampton.

The former Ajax man will bolster Ronald Koeman's defensive options at St. Mary's and should put pen to paper before the window closes.

Koeman has worked his magic on Alderweireld, convincing the Belgian to head to the Saints.

It is not year clear what fee Southampton will pay Atletico Madrid to take the centre-back on loan, or whether the agreement will contain a purchase option.

Alderweireld won La Liga with Los Rojiblancos last term and also reached the final of the Champions League.
