Arsenal have made a late bid to sign William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon – but have met with disappointment.

The Gunners have been chasing the Portugal international midfielder throughout the summer and have played poker with Sporting Lisbon, being unwilling to meet the player's €45m buy-out clause.

And as the window approaches its end, Arsenal made one last effort to pull William through the Emirates Stadium entrance.

However, according to Portuguese daily Diario de Noticias, Arsenal's bid has not been high enough to convince Sporting Lisbon to sell William, and has been rejected.

It now looks highly likely that the combative defensive midfielder will be staying put in Portugal, at least until the January transfer window swings open.

For Arsenal, the failure to sign William this summer will be a source of disappointment, however the Gunners have opted not to go above what they believe to be the value of the player.

William has also been of interest to Manchester United, but they have so far not come forward with an offer.
