Aston Villa have registered a bid with Real Sociedad for the former Real Madrid midfielder Sergio Canales.

The Spaniard, who joined Real Sociedad from Valencia in January this year, still has four years left on his contract.

Canales is a product of Racing Santander’s youth academy and joined Los Blancos in 2010, but he only made 15 senior appearances for the club.

Aston Villa, who are in the market to sign a midfielder, have made a late move for the 23-year-old.

Villa are still interested in signing Tom Cleverley from Manchester United, but have identified Canales as an alternative to the England midfielder.

The Villans have made a bid for Canales and are waiting for a reply from Real Sociedad with only a few hours left in the transfer window, according to the BBC.

Canales has made 22 appearances for Real Sociedad and was a second half substitute in their 4-2 win against Real Madrid last night.

Paul Lambert is still trying to sign Cleverley, but it is up to the player to decide whether he wants the move, while wage demands are a concern.
