Manchester United are closing in on the signature of Sampdoria goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

The custodian, who was between the sticks for Argentina's run to the World Cup final earlier this summer, is surplus to requirements at Sampdoria and has been looking for the exit door.

Manchester United have been on Romero's tail and now, according to Italian broadcaster Sportitalia, have moved closer to an agreement with Sampdoria.

A final agreement, which would take the goalkeeper to Old Trafford, is now just a step away.

Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal took a close look at Romero during the World Cup and is keen to add him to his squad to provide competition for David de Gea.

And Romero is thought to be delighted at the prospect of heading to play his football for the English giants.
