Sunderland have confirmed the season-long loan signing of defender Sebastian Coates from Liverpool.

Coates missed the majority of last season with a serious injury, but recovered to feature for Nacional in Uruguay on loan, before representing his national team at the World Cup.

He has been keen to secure regular first team football this season and, offered the opportunity by countryman and Sunderland boss Gus Poyet, has agreed to move to the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland announced: "Defender Sebastian Coates has joined Sunderland on a season-long loan from Liverpool."

The defender was signed by Liverpool in 2011 and was tipped for big things, having won the Young Player of the Tournament award at the 2011 Copa America, which Uruguay won.
