Sunderland are shipping out French defender Valentin Roberge to Ligue 1 side Reims on a season-long loan deal.

The Black Cats have agreed a deal with Reims which will see Roberge spend the remainder of this season playing his football in his homeland.

Coming in to replace Roberge at Sunderland will be Sebastian Coates, who is joining on loan from Liverpool.

The deal for Roberge is expected to be completed quickly, according to French broadcaster Eurosport.

Roberge joined Sunderland from Portuguese outfit Maritimo last year, linking up with the Black Cats on a free transfer.

Reims currently sit second bottom of the Ligue 1 table after a disappointing start to the season, which has seen them earn just one point from their opening four matches.

The club will hope Roberge can help to shore up a leaky defence.
