Leeds United worked throughout the day and evening yesterday in a bid to snap up Sassuolo striker Leonardo Pavoletti – but failed.

The Yorkshire giants wanted Pavoletti to head through the entrance at Elland Road at the same time as Matt Smith was exiting to join Fulham in a £500,000 deal.

The Whites gave their all to tempt Pavoletti to Elland Road but, according to multiple reports in Italy, could not persuade the striker to leave his homeland.

Pavoletti pondered Leeds' offer, but in the end was not convinced about the merits of heading to link up with the Whites, and rejected it.

Leeds did bring one player through the door last night, with Brian Montenegro, a Paraguayan striker, joining on a season-long loan deal.

The Championship club also signed Souleymane Doukara, who had been on loan from Catania, on a permanent basis.

Meanwhile, Leeds offloaded young striker Dominic Poleon, with the 20-year-old signing a two-year contract with Oldham.
